Artemas Fish Door Project – Own a ca 1760 Antique Door

Artemas Fish Door Project

The Portsmouth Historical Society is offering for sale six hand-hewn four-paneled doors from the
Artemas Fish House on Glen Road in Portsmouth. The doors are believed to be original to the
circa 1760 home built by revolutionary war soldier Artemas Fish, who sold it to Dr Peter Thacher
Wales, the first doctor in Portsmouth. It was later owned by Dr. Wales’ granddaughter and her
husband, John Coggeshall, a prominent builder of the time. Other associated family names are
Potter, Hazard, and Sherman, all with interesting Portsmouth and RI stories.

The doors are a unique opportunity to own a piece of history, and are well suited for a variety of
conversation starting home decor projects. They are available for a $100 donation, and can be
viewed at the museum on Sundays from 2-5 PM when we open for the season after May 30th or by appointment.  Check them out at the museum or email for more info!
