Sept 8, 2024 – It was ‘Family Fun Day at the Museum.
For the kids – Schoolmaster James Preston was back for another lesson at the Southermost School. Go back to 1725 at the schoolhouse to take part in a Spelling Bee. “Students” wrote their answers in chalk on their slate and maybe learned some arithmetic. Once they were done with their school work, they came Inside the museum to create a handmade toy (think “Whirligig” and “Cat’s Cradle”); or found their neighborhood on the 1878 School Map to figure out which Portsmouth school they would have attended. On display were photographs of those old schools.
For the parents – If you went to the Elmhurst School, you might have been reminded of the projects that you worked on (like the quilt or tiles on display). Memorabilia was on hand from Elmhurst and also scrapbooks from Coggeshall and Melville schools to browse through.
