October 27 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Join us as we commemorate Portsmouth’s role in the American Revolution with the planting of a red maple.
This tree planting is part of the Liberty Tree Project, which aims to plant a red maple tree in each of Rhode Island’s 39 municipalities to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Guests will be welcomed by Secretary of State Greg Amore and RI 250th Commission chair, along with members of the Navy Choristers, local and state officials, and the Portsmouth Historical Society.
All are invited!
The original Liberty Tree was a large American elm located in Boston, Massachusetts. It became a powerful symbol of colonial protest against British rule, especially after the Stamp Act of 1765. The tree was cut down by British forces in 1775, but its legacy continued as other “Liberty Trees” were established across the colonies.
