September 14 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Join us for our final opening of the 2025 summer season! In addition to a fun-filled afternoon of building simple colonial toys, we’ll be celebrating the 300th anniversary of Southermost Schoolhouse.
Built in 1725, this one-room schoolhouse is the oldest one-room schoolhouse in New England (and arguably the oldest in the nation!). View original 18th century documents pertaining to the school from the Portsmouth Historical Society Archives.
Learn more about the history of the school from Gloria Schmidt, author of Portsmouth History Notes. You will also have the chance to meet James Preston, the school’s first schoolmaster. A colonial builder will also be on site to showcase some vintage tools!
The museum will also be open.
Come explore Portsmouth’s educational history, enjoy a free family-friendly afternoon, and help us honor this remarkable 300-year milestone.
