The Portsmouth Historical Society is close to finishing a six year growth plan that has helped modernize the organization. Leaders shared an update at their annual meeting on December 11, attended by about 50 members, at the former Christian Union Church that now serves as the society’s museum and meeting space. The nonprofit, founded in 1938, said the plan has strengthened both its building and its overall operations.
Over the past several years, the society completed a long list of upgrades to improve comfort, safety, and access for visitors. Projects included a new heating and cooling system, roof replacements, an ADA compliant restroom, better lighting, and a new septic system. They also launched a new website and began digitizing their large archive. Most recently, they installed a Lifeway Mobility lift and made exterior improvements so visitors with mobility needs can reach the second floor.
With many major repairs now finished, the society is turning its attention to rebuilding membership. Membership has dropped to under 200, down from a past high near 800, and leaders hope to climb back to that level by December 2026, with a long term goal of 1,000 members. A new campaign called Play Your Part in Preserving Portsmouth’s History will promote individual and family memberships and encourage partnerships with local businesses. The society also plans more programs leading into Rhode Island’s 250th anniversary events, and will post a 2026 schedule of talks and learning programs on its website. The meeting ended with a reception featuring food and wine donated by Greenvale Vineyards.
