For a long time, stories about the American Revolution have mostly highlighted famous men like founding fathers, military leaders, and politicians. But there is more to the story. Women played major roles too, often working in the background, and they deserve more attention.
Behind the Lines Unsung Women of the American Revolution is a three day conference taking place March 13 through March 15, 2026. It will focus on the important and often forgotten ways women helped during America’s fight for independence. The event will be held at the historic 300 year old Portsmouth Friends Church in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and it will also be available online. On Friday evening, guests can enjoy light appetizers. Lunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday.
The conference is sponsored by the Debra Najecki Endowment. It will highlight women whose bravery, intelligence, and strength helped shape the Revolution in both obvious and quiet ways. Some were writers and political thinkers. Others worked as spies, nurses, and caretakers of their families and communities. While they kept homes running, they also challenged what people expected from them. Through letters, conversations, and published work, their ideas helped influence the values and choices of the revolutionary time.
