September 8 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Join us for Family Fun Day!
Kids will enjoy visiting Schoolmaster James Preston as he teaches at the Southermost School. Go back to 1725 at the schoolhouse to take part in a spelling bee. Write your answers in chalk on your slate and maybe learn some arithmetic. Once you are done with your school work, come inside to create a handmade toy; or find your neighborhood on a map of Portsmouth from 1878 to determine which Portsmouth school you would have attended. Portsmouth was once divided into several districts with each one having its own school. Photographs of these old schoolhouses will be on display.
Parents who attended the former Elmhurst School may recognize (or may have even helped create) a quilt we will have on display. School memorabilia will be on hand from Elmhurst as well as scrapbooks from Melville Elementary and the former Coggeshall School.
This event will be held at the Portsmouth Historical Society, 870 East Main Road in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
